Metformin is "the first-line medication for the treatment of type 2 diabetes." If you did NOT start on metformin, that would be a surprise. Absolutely the first thing that went into the bag at the pharmacy, my dose was then and is still 2000mg per day, split between morning and night. And the only side-effect I wonder about is this:"Higher doses and prolonged use are associated with incidence of vitamin B-12 deficiency," Metformin has three different actions: it slows the absorption of sugar in your small intestine; it also stops your liver from converting stored sugar into blood sugar; and it helps your body use your natural insulin more efficiently It's worth following this link to read the history as well as the unexpectedly broad list of things it is used for. In fact it is almost friendly when compared to the descriptions of other treatments. Hardly any real worries about side effects, it just works. How? About as simple as it gets: it simply decreases the liver's glucose production. Bang! That's it. No tricks. No long polysyllabic hyphenated names (well, a few!) It's Glucophage or metfornin. Take your pick. Think Big Pharma is in charge of drug prices? Read this: "The wholesale price in the developed world was between 21¢ and $5.55 per month as of 2014. In the United States, it costs $5 to $25 per month." Nice.
