Hello all,
This seemed like the best place to post this message...
For years, yes years, I’ve been telling my doctor I’m a type 1 diabetic... She kept saying, “Maybe, but I think you are a type 2...” To end this descrepincy, she ran what is called a Peptide C blood test to see if I indeed was a diabetic... Somehow, the results slid past her when they came in, and she discovered them during today’s appointment... I win, but I lose, for I am a Type 1... I lose because it means I will NEVER get off injectible INSULIN...
Here’s why my doctor had a difficult time believing I was indeed a Type 1. When I hit my 20’s, my childhood doctor told me of new diabetic drugs in pill form, so I begged him to let me try them instead of shots...
During those years, I controlled my blood sugar with diet and usually 3 or 4 different diabetic pills... I have never had Ketoacidosis to my knowledge... Though I’ve been hospitalized a number of times because my pancreas refuses to work...
Five years ago, when I started seeing a new doctor, I was put back on injectible insulin due to a 12.7 A1C. In 3 months, it came down to 7.3...
I have a degree in biological science and still cannot figure out why I never went into Ketoacidosis when not on real insulin...
I have spent my entire life counting carbs, 60 per day, since age 11... My childhood doctor told me to make sure the carbs I ate counted for something substantial and not junk food... Frito Lay Corn Chips are the secret I think!!!
Sorry for being so winded, thought it was important for others to see that diabetes can be a challenge and controlled if one works at it...
Ha Ha... Eat fresh veggies and lean meat, when you get tired of that, eat lean meat and fresh veggies...
On July 21, 2016, I had vertical sleeve gastrectomy to help get me off the diabetic drugs and lose enough weight to be healthy. My highest weight was 278 pounds, my surgery weight was 244 pounds, and my current weight is 162 pounds... This journey was far from easy and reserved for another time... However, it kept me off all diabetic drugs for one year; then, I was put back on 10 units Lantis per day. Within 3 months, I had regained 16 pounds back and was devistated. My doctor put me on Jardience, which has brought me back down not quite to goal weight, but close...
I would love to hear others stories about their journeys on the diabetic path... We are all here to learn from one another and at same time we can realize we are not alone despite the multiple differences.
