Another personal story! I am researching things that have happened to me, assuming that my type 2 experiences are the norm, and if I can explain my own trouble before it also happens to you, maybe I can help you avoid or stall that problem. So I described the numbness of my feet as "maybe one of the first symptoms" of diabetes? Now I have read more, I find that this is just not so. It more often takes longer to affect most people. I keep finding out the things I have had happen are typically not happening to others. I feel so special. I read that neuropathy leads to loss of balance and coördination (yes, early in my experience) and "serious foot problems, such as ulcers, infections...", all true and part of my history. Now I know more about how varied this numbing can be, I think I'm lucky not to have it worse. Please read this page of information from the Mayo Clinic. You should know about the several ways this problem can manifest itself. And as with all other aspects of diabetes, the prevention is stated as "blood sugar control", so that common phrase is the best advice yet again.
