Hey all, Steve led me to this site from the bicycling forums. A little on me:
52 YO male, was diagnosed type II about 10 years ago, was prediabetic since my late 30's. I'm relatively fit and active as I ride, walk and play softball. 5'11, 212 lbs currently. I'm taking Janumet which is a combination of Januvia and Metformin. My A1C the past year has bounced from the low 6's to the low 9's and I recently switched to the Janumet as Metformin alone wasn't keeping my numbers in check.
I have a family history of diabetes as my mom and several aunts were all diabetic. I have 8 siblings and 6 of us are diabetic, all are on insulin except me but I am the youngest. We are 1/2 Pacific Islander and from what I've read diabetes is very common in our ethnicity. I've pretty much grown up with the disease as my mom was diabetic as long as I can remember. My sisters and brother who are diabetic are great resources for me as we compare our issues and reactions to certain drugs. There is a lot of similarities between us but it has affected us all a little differently.
I really haven't had any real issues with my diabetes, no neurapathy, vision or organ issues. I'm for the most part a healthy person with diabetes. My mom also lived with it for 40 years with no issues related to the diabetes. She died of cancer. So far none of my siblings have had issues either however one of my aunts had severe problems losing vision, an amputation and died in her 50's as she never managed her diabetes.
I'll poke my head in on a regular basis and hopefully I can add to this forum. I'm by no means an expert on the matter but have lived around it and with it for over 40 years.
