Januvia is a s itagliptin. Janumet is a combination of Januvia and metformin. Fine! What the heck is a sitagliptin? Glad you asked. Gliptins (there are about 20) are dipeptidyl peptidase-inhibitors. (See the ADA info about DPP-4) Insulin works to lower blood glucose. Glucagon increases blood glucose levels. DPP-4 inhibitors work to boost incrētin levels which inhibit glucagon release. Result? Lower blood glucose levels. Everybody got that? So why make Janumet? The company explains it succinctly "JANUMET can lower blood sugar more than metformin alone."
